Anilliterate felt indisposed and went to see doctor yesterday. The reticent doctor asked him about the symptoms he had.The man answered: ”I have had headache for almost a week and sometimes I have illusion.” After some examination, the doctor wroteon the paper benigncerebral tumor and prescribed a certain type of anodyne and some antibiotics. Then turned to theilliterate:” Take a modicum of anodyne, eat more fruit and vegetables, remember, don’t take toomuch exercise and keep a placid and relaxed mood.” The man asked doctor in a tremblingtone: ” doctor, will I die soon?” The doctor looked at him astoundingly and asserted: ”No, it’s not that easy.”

Theilliterate came back home with a morose look and said to his wife: ”I’m afraid I will die soon.”His wife, a docile woman but also illiterate, consoled him: ”No, dear, you won’t die; the doctor says thetumor just begins(benign) and it’s curative.” The man looked dubious and then he smiled,” You reright, the doctor told me it was not easy to die.” He smiled again, looking athis callous hands.


一个文盲昨天感到不舒服去看了医生。寡言少语的医生询问了他相关症状。男人回答道:“我已经头疼一个礼拜了,有时会产生幻觉”。做了一些检查后,医生写了良性脑补肿瘤,开了一些止疼药和抗生素。他对文盲说:“吃少量止疼药,多吃蔬菜。记着不要做剧烈运动,保持心情平静轻松。”男人用颤抖的声音问医生:“医生,我是不是很快就死了?”医生惊讶地看着他断言道:“不会的,没那么容易。”

文盲问到家表情忧郁对他妻子说:“我想我可能很快就要死了。”他的妻子性格温顺,但同样是个文盲,安慰他道:“不会的,亲爱的,你不会死的,医生说你的肿瘤刚刚开始,可以治疗的。”男人半信半疑,然后笑了:“你说得对,医生说我没那么容易死。”他再次面露笑容,看了看布满老茧的手。

reticent        adj. not revealing one’sthoughts or feelings readily 沉默寡言的,沉默的

【助记法】re一再+tic(tac/touc/tec/tic的变体,表示“触摸”)+ent,一再触摸,不说话


illusion    n. an instance of a wrong ormisinterpreted perception of a sensory experience; a deceptive appearance orimpression 幻觉,错觉

【助记法】il加强+lus(玩弄,同lud)+ion-被【幻觉】玩弄-幻觉,如collude共谋,elude逃跑,ludicrous荒谬的


benign    adj. of a diseasenot harmful in effect;(of a tumor) not malignant 良性的

【助记法】ben表示好,如benefit 好处, beneficial有益处的,benevolent善意的,benediction祝福,benefactor做好的人。其反义词为“male”,如malignant恶性的,恶毒的,malevolent恶意的,maladroit笨拙的,malediction诅咒,malefactor做坏事的人


cerebral    adj. of the cerebrum of thebrain 大脑的,脑的


prescribe    v. of a medical pracititioneradvise and authorize the use of (a medicine or treatment) for someone,especially in writing 开药方,开处方

【助记法】pre预先+scribe-预先写好药量,开处方


anodyne    n. a painkilling drug ormedicine止痛药

【助记法】an没有+odyne痛


placid      adj. (of a body ofwater) free from disturbance by heavy waves平静的,温和的

【助记法】plac(plaz,平静)+id(形容词词尾),如placate使之安抚,complacent自满的,plaza广场


modicum       n. a smallquantity of a particular thing, especially something desirable or valuable 少量,一点点

【助记法】mod=modest适度的,icum量:适度的量-少量


astounding     adj. surprisingly impressive ornotable 令人惊奇的,吃惊的

【助记法】as加强+toun(惊吓,tone/tun/toun音变体,用“声音”惊吓)+d,是震撼,如stun惊吓


morose     adj. sullen andill-tempered 郁闷的,忧郁的

【助记法】mor 脾气,习惯


docile    adj. willing to be taught orled or supervised or directed 温顺的

【助记法】doc(通过讲话使某人获得知识)+ile(形容词词尾),容易听到人讲知识的,温顺的。 doctor, doctrine教条,dogma教条


console    v. comfort(someone) at a time ofgrief or disappointment 安慰,慰藉

【助记法】con加强+sole安慰-一起安慰,如solace安慰,此外,sol作为soul的音变体,还表示“精神”的意思,如resolute有决心的,insolent狂野的

curative    adj. able to cure disease 有疗效的,治病的

【助记法】cure的形容词,表示“治愈性的”


dubious adj.hestitating or doubting; not to be relied upon; suspect 半信半疑的,怀疑的

【助记法】du(二)+b+ious(二种状态)-不肯定,怀疑的,表示“二”的还有di/dou/do/du, dioxide二氧化物,doubtful怀疑的,duplicate复制,duplex双倍的


callous   adj. showing or having aninsensitive and cruel disregard for others 起老茧的,硬结的

【助记法】callcal,石头)-ous,起老茧的。此外,cal还表示计算的意思,如calendar日历,calculus微积分,recalcitrant倔强的(calc表示石头)
