Firstindustrial revolution and northwestern Commercial agriculture(1820-1860):


Region: old northwest- applied states under NW ordinance;mainly grow grains


Transformation: from miss river transport and southernmarket, to RR and canal transport and eastern market commercial


agriculture: specialization (single cash crops);transportation create east market; cheap west lands and easy loan; tech innovation(steelplow, mechanical reaper- both for growing grains)


southern agriculture andcotton(1820-1860):

king cotton(cotton as first cash crop; tech innovation-cotton gin and acceleratedproductivity, more demand for slaves; br and NE textile market)


ever moving west: for undepleted soil and new land

slave society(bannedslave importation after 1808- American born slaves; from peculiar institutionand necessary bad to positively good; slave revolts-nat turner and denmarkvesey, caused slave codes; slave life-separated family, sexual harassment,strong communal and religious tie)


WEST STAGE-Settling the greatplain(1865-1900):

Background: the great American desert and awful environment;damage of environment and extinction of buffalo; continuous conflict with NA;ranchers, farmers and miners; moves to cities and decline of rural agriculture


Miners: individual miners to large mining companies;boomtowns, new statehood due to mining and ghost towns; mingled ethnicity andracism(Chinese exclusion act of 1882); NA lost land due to mining(the blackhills and Sioux); silver standard (supplied more silver)


Ranchers: cowboys in Texas(free land for ranching; easternmarkets for texas cattle; construction of RR and long drives along it; cattlehubs like Chicago); end of free ranching(homesteaders and barbed wire; winterblizzard)


Farming: background(homestead act of 1862-good land inindustrialists’ hand; RR; severe weather; sodbusters); establishment ofirrigation and dam system


SOUTH STAGE-newsouth and agriculture post war(1865-1900):

still largely agricultural


Poverty: sharecroppers and tenant farmers; high productivityof cotton dropped price; crop lien system; caused formationorganizations(farmers’ alliance)


GENERAL STAGE-agriculture society changein(1865-1900):

Background:(the decline of rural culture; farmer debts; hightariff); commercialization of farming: (individual to cash crop growing; techboost productivity); drop of price: (deflation; RR and middlemen;productivity);


farmermovement:(grange-cooperatives, political reform; grange laws: munn v. Illinois-stateregulation, interstate commerce act- regulate RR rate and ICC; farmers’alliances-ocala platform, populist origin, pro-silver )



Gilded age(1877-1900)

Many in debt; hopefor more money supply and inflation; while creditors insist on gold standard

Higher tarrifcaused retaliated tariff; lose overseas market; farm price lower and profitslower


Populism: start from farmer alliance; ohama platform; jamesweaver in election of 1892


WWI prosperity: (1916-1918)

Background: high demand domestic and foreign; government minimumprice


Post war recession(WWI): farmers sufferd falling prices


1920s: farmers were harmed

Background: new debts; new tech increase productivity, loweredprice; high tariffs hurt farmers and international agricultural product trade


1929-1939 great depression:

Herbert hoover’sfarm board(stabilize price by buying surplus; little help)

Farmer unrest: farm holiday association(reverse pricedrop by stop 1932 crops from reaching market); foreclosure of farms due toinsolvent debts

FDR’s popularadministration among farmers(AAA-reduce production subsidies; RA-farmer loan;farmer become one part of demo new coalition)

Dust bowl and okies: farmlands in mid west destroyed byprolonged drought and high winds’ blowing away topsoil(dust bowl); okiesmigration to California(John steinbeck’s the grape of wrath)


1952-1960: Eisenhower

Soil-bank act: pay farmer for underproduction; stabilizefarm price
